Bow Wow Wow
Aphrodisiac (live London, 2010)
An interview with Bow Wow Wow singer/solo artist Annabella Lwin by Gina Abelkop
What are you favorite songs to perform, and why?
That’s a hard 1 to answer as there are a few..! From Bow wow wow days songs like ’Jungle Boy’, ‘Golly, Golly Go Buddy’, ’I Want Candy’ because they are ‘join in’ type of songs with uplifting vibrations which seemed to make people happy whenever they heard them.
From My Solo catalogue (still all of it yet to be heard..!) songs called ’Sacred Ground’ ‘Temple of Paradise’ ’Change to Kalmer’ because of their Positive messages/vibrations which are very relevant today.
Go to my website annabellalwin.com and you let me know!
How would you describe the energy that is passed back and forth between a crowd and performers?
Magical/breathtaking/incredible/uplifting/spiritual
How does dancing- both yours and the crowd’s- shape that energy?
That’s also a difficult question to answer simply..!
I think when the audience hear something they also ‘feel’ in the core of their soul, in the depth of their be-ing.. it transcends the simplistic experience of just ’attending a concert’ to hear a ‘live’ band/performer. they are actually participating in that experience and therefore connecting with ‘other souls’ in a much more honest and open way.
In previous interviews you’ve spoken about M. McLaren encouraging you to use your imagination in order to create stories within a song to connect to. What kinds of stories or narratives do you embed in your own songs?
I can’t answer that as I WROTE them!
would prefer YOU the listener, tell ME what it is YOU ‘feel’ understand, after listening.
What are some of your favorite songs/musicians to dance to?
Motown, Prince, Fat back band, Chaka Khan, Stevie wonder, Earth wind & Fire, Jackson 5, Michael jackson, too many to list but
some Disco, some Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical,
I LOVE ALL KINDS of Music!
Can you describe what it feels like when you’re dancing to a song you really, really love?
Depending on the ‘mood’ of the song.. can vary from uplifting, exciting, inspiring, joyful, sexy!
How do the rhythms in your own songs affect the emotional impact of the songs?
Hum..THIS is difficult to answer..don’t really ‘think’ about it. if it sounds, feels RIGHT for that particular idea, then usually go with it.
Your style has always been distinct, playful and performative. What is the connection, for you, between fashion/style, performance and identity?
Again, I did the whole ‘fashion thing’ when 14 and we helped advertize Vivienne Westwoods clothes when I first joined Bow wow wow. Nowa days it’s simply more important for the MUSIC to speak for itself. the rest..down to the place/mood/time/arena.
How has your personal style evolved from the early days of BWW to now and in what ways does it serve both you and the performances?
My personal style has changed in lots of ways simply because I have ‘developed’ and evolved into the 40 yr old woman I am today. It’s a compliment if people say 1 has ‘style’. My idea of style is probably completely different from another person.again, not every1 agrees with 1 persons idea of style. as we are ALL so Unique! That’s what makes the world and US as individuals interesting : )
What I wear ‘generally’ and what I wear onstage is just an Extension of MY OWN ‘personal style’ i guess..
What music/writing/film/visual art inspires you lately, and how?
In Two words..Colour/Difference.
Anything and Everything inspires me. It’s not any 1 thing.
Do you find yourself making connections between the art that inspires you and the art you, in turn, make?
Not often..but probably.
With the ‘everything and anything’ example. I’m continually ‘sensing’ with my artistic sensibilities. then.. starting from ‘scratch’, plucking from thin air, usually have so many ideas, tend to have to put some in ‘mental’ boxes so can refer to them later..if so inclined…or have the time/patience!
What do those connections look like?
The ONE common denominator in my work is ‘feeling’ Naturally and Realistically, the Spiritual and ‘bringing together’ messages, of EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, through my lyrics/melodies and Music.
The ONLY way i ‘feel’ can do that, is through feedback from my fans. when I sing/perform ‘live’ onstage or communicating via my social sites. currently MYSPACE and Facebook.
